MD Vacancy

Our present Musical Director is moving on, after 15 very successful years, and we are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic replacement, to start in January 2021.


This is an exciting opportunity for a new MD to work with us in our ambition to continuously improve the reputation of the choir, our performance standards, and the experience we provide for our choir members.


It is a particularly stimulating time for the choir, as we have just changed our name to Cherwell Choral Society, to better represent the geographical spread of our members and our audiences.


Job Description

Cherwell Choral Society, previously known as Warriner Choral Society, is a long established non-auditioned choral society based in Bloxham, currently with around 90 members. It has acquired a reputation for producing high quality performances, with three or four concerts a year supported by our professional musical director, accompanist, orchestra and soloists.  We rehearse on Tuesday evenings.  See our website for further background information.


We aspire to advance even further the reputation of the choir, to achieve outstanding concert performances of a varied repertoire, and to provide an enjoyable and stimulating experience for choir members both at rehearsal and concert.


The main responsibilities of our Musical Director are to:

  • Take weekly rehearsals focusing on preparation for concerts
  • Prepare and publish rehearsal content schedules
  • Direct choir, orchestra and soloists in concert
  • Choose future concert repertoire, in consultation with committee
  • Work with committee to establish and work within concert budgets
  • Source concert orchestra, accompanists and soloists
  • Source scores for orchestra and soloists
  • Liaise with Librarian regarding choral music editions to be used
  • Use conducting and teaching skills to continuously develop high choral standards
  • Build rapport with choir to gain commitment and enthusiasm
  • Provide constructive feedback to choir members as appropriate
  • Work with committee to monitor and ensure minimum member attendance levels, in order to achieve a high standard of performance
  • There is an expectation that the MD will attend most committee meetings

Person Specification

It is essential that candidates have the following:

  • Music degree
  • Experience in conducting mixed voice choirs
  • Ability to source orchestra and soloists
  • Ability to achieve rapport with choir
  • Ability to provide enjoyable and stimulating rehearsal experience to maintain enthusiasm of choir members
  • Good knowledge of classical choral repertoire
  • Ability to work well with committee
  • Should be prepared to undertake CRB check if required

  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview, to be held in early January 2020
  • A final shortlist will be invited to audition, by taking part of a choir rehearsal, to be held towards the end of January 2020
